Controlling Your Mind To Be Productive (a realistic approach)

anayyar2005

You woke up to a regular day having no school or work, so what can you do today with all this free time? Most people would think of resting the entire day by sleeping, ordering food, and binge-watching a tv show. Many times people say “I’ll take a small break and then I will be productive”. This is a continuous task that results in the waste of valuable time. Nevertheless, it is important to take a break frequently, but it is crucial to utilize your time efficiently.

The mastermind behind this is the limbic system, a set of brain structures containing the pleasure center, which leads to procrastination. As a high school student, I have a lot of experience with utilizing my time efficiently ranging from maintaining satisfactory grades to regularly performing community service. Some people may have experienced this or realized the value of productivity later on while some may still have opposing views. Sometimes, learning from others' experiences can also be a valuable lesson. “In life, you learn lessons. And sometimes you learn them the hard way. Sometimes you learn them too late” (Taylor swift).

Throughout high school, I have been able to influence my mind to avoid procrastination to give more time to my interests. Therefore, here are some tips that can be used to effectively control your mind to be productive:

1. Constantly remind yourself of the work that has to be done.

Most people say that this can be done by simply setting reminders on your phone. But, let’s be real, when a person is scrolling through Tik-Tok and sees a reminder then a common response after looking at the reminder is “I’ll do it in five minutes”.

Therefore, some other effective ways to remind yourself of important tasks include:

~ Make a To-do list with tasks and a reward after each task is completed. Rewarding yourself will allow you to stay motivated and avoid procrastination.

~ Keep inspirational quotes from the people you admire the most (in the form of room decor or wall hangings) to use as motivation.

2. Create a well-organized daily schedule.

Doing the same things daily, with a set schedule, will make your brain and body used to being on task at all times. Although this seems like a tedious task, it is immensely beneficial for being productive. I have been using this technique throughout my high school journey and it has greatly helped me stay focused and allowed me to effectively manage my time.

3. Constantly remind yourself of all the benefits.

Usually, it is easier to persuade your mind when you are aware of all the benefits you will get from accomplishing your goal. Therefore, whenever you are avoiding productivity, then remind yourself of all the potential benefits you will receive from changing your habits.

Overall with improved productivity comes great success that can not only be used for personal benefits but also the betterment of society.
